A save-the-date has one job: make people put the date in their calendar and feel happy about it. It goes out early, often before the dress, the venue photos or the pre-wedding shoot exist, which is why it is the most improvised photo in most weddings. These fifteen ideas are chosen because they work as a printed card, as a phone-screen message and as the post you make when you announce the date.
Ideas with the date in the photo
- Chalkboard or letter board. The date written by hand, held at hip height, faces above it.
- Calendar page. Circle the date on a paper calendar and hold it between you.
- Balloon numbers. Foil numbers for the day and month, on a beach or a rooftop.
- Written in the sand. Shoot from above with your feet in frame.
- Cinema marquee. Many small cinemas will put your names and date up for a fee.

Ideas with space for text
- Sunset walk, wide. Couple small in the frame at the bottom third, sky above for the text.
- Picnic from above. Blanket, snacks, the two of you lying down; the blanket corners give you room for words.
- White studio, off-centre. Stand to one side of a plain set. The empty half takes the date.
- Doorway. Standing in a door frame with a wall on either side.
- Under an umbrella. Umbrella top cropped in; text goes in the sky.
Ideas that tell a story
- Where you met. The café, the campus, the office lobby. Even if it is ugly, it is yours.
- The ring, reluctantly. One hand-and-ring frame per set, not four.
- Amusement park. Carousel lights, cotton candy, a laughing frame. Great for casual weddings.
- Your pet. Pets rescue any stiff photo. Someone off-camera holds a treat.
- Destination preview. If it is a destination wedding, a photo in that setting (a beach, a vineyard, a Paris balcony) tells guests what to pack.

Crop, text and timing
- Shoot vertical and horizontal. Cards are usually 5×7 in either orientation; phone screens are vertical.
- Keep faces in the top or middle third. Text goes where the faces are not.
- Two fonts maximum. One serif for names, one sans for details.
- Send 6 to 8 months out for destination weddings, 4 to 6 months otherwise.
No photos yet? That is normal
Most couples send save-the-dates before the pre-wedding shoot. If you want the “destination preview” or a clean studio frame right now, AI wedding photo tools can produce them from selfies in an afternoon. TwoShotPro also includes a free mobile save-the-date and invitation, so the photo and the card come from the same place.
